Guffer // Judy & the Jerks // Deathro // Kult of Indifference

Guffer describes themselves as “humboldt tin can sludge skrunk” and that’s honestly pretty accurate. Their singer’s emotional spoken delivery calls to mind Suicidal Tendencies and made me really miss Fashion Jackson (specifically this song). Maybe that’s also because Guffer’s bass player was wearing overalls and has dyed hair. Lord, Fashion Jackson was incredible. Guffer was great too! The misanthropy of the singer’s shirt reflected their lyrics and the heavy angst of their music, but was perfectly at odds with the easy smiles and laughs traded between bandmates throughout their performance.

As Judy & the Jerks were setting up I noticed their singer doing jumping jacks and their bass player stretching his quads and I knew they were gonna be great. Frenetic hardcore punk from the South with positive energy and a chaotic live show. They were enchanting, vivacious, and clearly having as much fun performing as the crowd was having listening to them. Their performance was equal parts athleticism and attitude, and wholly unmitigated fun.

I had heard Deathro is a legendary frontman but was completely unprepared for how captivating and brilliant his performance actually was. I caught an inkling when I saw him scope out the trampoline on the opposite side of the yard from the stage before his set and ask the promoter if the mic cable would reach. Deathro didn’t limit his antics to the stage – he hopped up on chairs, ran inside the house and sang through the kitchen window, danced on the steps on his way out, hopped on the trampoline, climbed the fence, climbed the crowd, he was everywhere! His band matched his mania, somehow both incredibly tight and explosive at the same time. If you have the opportunity to see them live, do it!

Kult of Indifference is famously a great time (despite singing almost exclusively about murder). Unfortunately they went on after the sun was fully down and my ability to capture their set was severely limited. I included a couple soft silhouettes I was able to shoot before the light was totally hopeless. It might be worth experimenting with flash, but I like to be unobtrusive when I can.
