Rohirrim // Braintooth // Parasite Caste // Greybush
I’ve seen Rohirrim’s name on fliers and have been intrigued (Towers is my favorite of the holy trilogy) but this was my first time actually seeing them perform. A duo in classic corpse paint playing wholly improvised death metal, with lyrics pulled from whatever reading material the drummer / vocalist can find lying around the venue. Pretty awesome project, and no short supply of engaging reading material at Savage Henry with old copies of the magazine in abundance.
Braintooth was the reason I skipped refereeing a roller derby double header to come to this show. Andrew, the drummer, and I became friends in high school and played music together for years. We both moved to Humboldt to go to college where Andrew studied music and dove deep into drumming. He’s an insanely talented drummer. While I miss seeing him locally in The Sturgeons, he, Sam, and Gabriel absolutely shred as a trio in Braintooth. Blistering riffs, raucous rhythms anchored by Andrew’s aggressive drumming, and seething vocals traded back and forth in gutteral growls and throat-scraping screams from Sam and Gabriel. They just released their first EP Gravity Wins on 7″.
Parasite Caste traveled with Braintooth on their release tour for their new 7″ and they were fantastic! The sludgiest of the bands that night. Much more my end of the metal spectrum – slow and low, heavy and hypnotic.
While Greybush‘s metalcore isn’t my preferred subgenre of metal, the crowd was arguably most hyped for them. Their playing with and off each other is tight and their performance on stage is polished. A strong finish to an excellent evening.
Huge thanks to Burnstitch Artist Collective for booking the bands, organizing the event, and welcoming me and my camera.
