Derya Yildirim & Grup Simsek 08/03/2025

Derya Yildirim & Grup Simsek released one of my favorite albums this year, Yarin Yoksa, their first on Big Crown Records (label run by Leon Michels and Danny Akalepse, any artist on this label is worth your time). Derya Yildirim infuses psychedelic soul with Turkish folk sounds so naturally that it’s a little shocking to realize you’ve never heard anything like it. Her saz complements the rest of the instruments perfectly. Their performance included original songs and Turkish folk songs from the 70s recast in their inimitable flavor. It was fascinating to learn more about that time in Türkiye and the revolutionary artists who composed and performed these songs, who often landed in jail for their efforts. I love that the band was excited to play such a small and intimate space, sharing that it recalled for them the experience of growing up playing in living rooms with family and friends.

Shout-out to the Miniplex for continuing to bring incredible bands like Derya Yildirim & Grup Simsek to Humboldt County. We’re truly blessed to have performers like this come through.
